About ISOC LA & SoCal
Our Mission
We demand a lot from the Internet. It always rises to the challenge, whatever may be happening in the world around us. We have learned to count on the Internet as a critical constant, and today it’s hard to think of life without it. But as much as we need the Internet, the Internet also needs us. It needs all of us to help it grow because many people in our community in Southern California still don’t have access and the information environment that we rely on faces increasing threats, including Internet fragmenting, Internet shutdowns, and undermining encryption. These negatively impact our human rights such as privacy, security, and freedom of expression.

Previous Events
On November 14, Lianna Galstyan (ISOCLASC Board Chair) joined Ronald Petty of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter for a special holiday panel discussion with members of California’s Internet Society chapters. Together, they highlighted recent initiatives, digital inclusion projects, and advocacy work for a safer, more resilient Internet, while offering festive reflections on how communities across the state can continue supporting an open, trusted, and accessible Internet. The event brought together long-time members and newcomers alike to connect, exchange ideas, and celebrate the season.
On October 9, Tom Thorley (Former Board Chair & ISOCLASC Co-Founder) delivered a talk highlighting how January’s devastating LA wildfires revealed both the lifesaving power and the fragility of community connectivity. He described how crowdsourced platforms like Watch Duty and MyShake became critical real-time information networks when traditional systems failed, enabling residents to navigate danger, stay informed, and support one another. Tom concluded by urging investment in resilient infrastructure and trusted communication tools so that no community is left disconnected in future climate-driven emergencies.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. We offer a variety of opportunities for individuals and groups to get involved and make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
